It’s amazing what burn-out, a relationship and the decidedly complex world of a 2L law student can do the lifeblood of a blog. It’ll kill it I say!
Well I figure now is as good a time as any to get back into it.
I’m technically just past mile marker 13.1 in this marathon called a legal education. What do I have to say for it…well first of, I think I’ve largely lucked out with every class I’ve taken. And I’ve also realised that if any evening student wishes to maintain their sanity then at some point they need to skip at least part of the summer and just be.
I took the second half of this past summer off and it was the best thing I could have ever done. My brain which undoubtedly is already swiss-cheese-like has (almost) bounced back to its original state. But most of all I’m not bitter. Yes, folks you read it right, bitter. The summer between my 1L and 2L year comprised of a property class that has left all my class scratching their heads and a fantastic administrative law class (yes, administrative law can be fantastic- you go Prof. Bush!) that was coupled with the onerous write-on process. I was so burnt out after that summer that I was just angry to be back at school in the fall. And you don’t want to be angry and bitter. Then you’ll be that guy. And we all know, you don’t want to be that guy.
Another thing I’ve realised since the dusk of my 2L year, is that both part-time and especially full-time students need to start getting their act together as far as charting out the course of their next couple of years. It really is make or break time and you might as well have a plan, even if you don’t end up sticking to it.
My 3L year so far has been three classes, continuing to work full time and squeezing in a judicial internship which in 2 days has already taught me far more than I imagined.
My UH insider steered me towards one of my classes and the internship. So far I’m already very grateful.
I’m taking employment law, evidenceĀ and trusts & wills. More on those & my internship as the days go by. Right now this is just a warm up.
It’s nice to be back dear readers. I’m sure the two of you missed me!
